WHAT IS A WING-TIP CSK SELF-DRILLING SCREW?

A SMARTER FASTENING DESIGN

A Wing-Tip csk Self-Drilling Screw combines three important features into one engineered fastener:

  • Wing-Tip Cutting Wings
  • Countersunk (CSK) Head
  • Self-Drilling Point

As the screw passes through timber, the cutting wings enlarge the clearance hole, preventing the threads from gripping the timber prematurely.

Once the drill point reaches the steel substrate, the wings break off automatically, allowing the threads to engage only the steel and pull the timber firmly into position.

The result is a stronger and more secure connection.

HOW THE WING-TIP WORKS

THREE STEPS. ONE SMOOTH INSTALLATION.

STEP 1 — CUT

The cutting wings ream a slightly oversized hole through the timber.

This prevents friction between the timber and the screw threads.

STEP 2 — BREAK

When the wings contact the steel surface, they are intentionally sheared off.

Only the drill point continues drilling into the steel.

STEP 3 — CLAMP

The screw threads engage the steel while the countersunk head seats flush into the timber.

This creates maximum clamping force without leaving a gap between the timber and the steel.

WHY CHOOSE A CSK HEAD?

A FLUSH AND PROFESSIONAL FINISH

Unlike hex head screws, the Countersunk (CSK) Head sits level with the timber surface after installation.

Benefits include:

  • Smooth walking surface
  • Improved appearance
  • Reduced trip hazards
  • Easy installation of floor coverings
  • Professional architectural finish

This makes CSK screws the preferred choice for flooring and visible timber applications.

KEY PRODUCT FEATURES

ENGINEERED FOR PERFORMANCE

WING-TIP DESIGN

Prevents premature thread engagement in timber.

Improves clamping force.

Reduces timber lifting.

SELF-DRILLING POINT

Drills and taps steel in one operation.

No pre-drilling is required under recommended conditions.

Drilling capacity depends on the selected drill point (Point #2, #3, #4 or #5).

HIGH PULL-OUT STRENGTH

Designed to provide secure fixing between timber and steel framing.

Excellent holding performance under dynamic loading.

CLEAN COUNTERSUNK FINISH

Produces a flush installation with minimal timber damage.

Ideal for exposed architectural timber.

AVAILABLE SURFACE FINISHES

Depending on the application, Wing-Tip CSK screws are available with:

  • Zinc Plated
  • Ruspert® Ceramic Coating
  • Mechanical Galvanized Coating
  • Stainless Steel / Bi-Metal (selected applications)

The appropriate coating should be selected according to the corrosion environment.

INSTALLATION RECOMMENDATIONS

ACHIEVE THE BEST PERFORMANCE

For optimum results:

✓ Use a variable-speed drill

✓ Install perpendicular (90°) to the work surface

✓ Allow the wings to pass completely through the timber before engaging the steel

✓ Select a drill point suitable for the steel thickness

✓ Avoid excessive installation speed

✓ Tighten until the countersunk head sits flush with the timber surface

COMMON INSTALLATION MISTAKES

AVOID THESE PROBLEMS

✗ Using Wing-Tip screws for timber-to-timber applications

✗ Selecting a drill point with insufficient drilling capacity

✗ Installing at an angle

✗ Over-tightening and damaging the timber surface

✗ Using a screw that is too short to achieve adequate thread engagement

Choosing the correct screw and installing it properly ensures maximum holding strength and long-term performance.

WHY PROFESSIONAL BUILDERS CHOOSE WING-TIP SCREWS

Compared with conventional self-drilling screws, Wing-Tip CSK screws provide:

  • Faster installation
  • Stronger clamping force
  • Reduced timber movement
  • Cleaner countersunk finish
  • Improved installation accuracy
  • Better long-term structural reliability

For timber-to-steel fastening, they have become the preferred solution in many professional construction projects.
