Self Drilling Screws  are available in a variety of shank lengths and diameters. Diameter is indicated by a numeric size that runs from #6 to #14, with #6 being the thinnest and #14 being the thickest. The #8 and #10 Self Drilling Screws are the most commonly used.

Tip size is designated with a value of 1 through 5, which indicates the thickness of the sheet metal that the screw can penetrate — 1 represents the thinnest metal and 5 the thickest. The most common Self Drilling Screws tip is Thread 3, 4 and 5 screws are very popular for any projects using thicker metals.

Thread 1 screws are designed for roofing applications with metal-to-wood connections. These screws include a very tiny drill bit, which means they make a hole with a diameter that is significantly smaller than that of the external threads on the rest of the screw. With the smaller hole, the threads can bite into the material for a secure hold.

Self Drilling Screws are also distinguished by head type. There are two common types of Self Drilling Screws heads:

  • Hex washer head: Features a built-in washer to better distribute weights and loads over a wide area. This style is ideal for roofing projects and other heavy-duty applications.
  • Modified truss: Features an oversize dome head and a flange to create a larger area under the head for greater bearing surface.

Other than that, all other styles of heads on self-drilling screws generally have a Phillips drive, which helps in driving the screw in straight. The square drive is becoming more and more desired, as the bit is less likely to slip while driving. Phillips pan-head Self Drilling Screws are ideal for light-duty applications.

Another common type of screw is the flat-head screw, which is used when you need a flush surface. Self Drilling Screws with wings — are the ultimate wood to metal screws.

We are often asked for stainless steel self-drilling screws. They are available, but the tips are not the best for drilling into stainless steel. For stainless steel applications, we suggest bi-metal Self Drilling Screws, where the body of the screw is stainless steel, and the tip is made of carbon steel, which allows the screw to drill into the stainless steel with ease.
